Build Before You Shoot

The biggest mistake new players make is shooting from anywhere. Soccer REAL is much kinder to players who move the ball first. Use passes to pull defenders out of shape, then shoot when the angle opens. A shot from inside the box with a clear view of goal is worth five hopeful efforts from distance.

Time Is a Weapon

Your passes have to be on time. A pass that arrives a moment late lets a defender step in. Watch the run of your teammate and release a little early, into the space they are running into, not where they are standing now.

Defend the Break

When you lose the ball, the other team's counter-attack can be quick. The match runs on, so your shape matters at both ends of the field.

Shooting Tips

• Aim for the corners. Shots down the middle are what keepers expect. The low corners are the hardest place for anyone to reach.
• Don't over-power. Maximum power often means maximum height. A firm, placed shot is usually better than a blast.
• Take the angle into account. From a wide position, aiming across goal at the far post is the classic finish for a reason.
• Stay patient late in the match. A late equaliser comes from a good chance, not from panic shots from the halfway line.
